<image:caption>WHERE HANDS MEET - March 2026, a solo exhibition by well-known Maltese abstract artist Josette Fenech, for the second time with this artist, Marcon led the exhibition management, public relations, marketing, and cultural coordination of the project, supporting the development and public presentation of the exhibition from concept to delivery. Working closely with the artist, curator, media partners, sponsors, and The Malta Trust Foundation, the role involved coordinating exhibition logistics, stakeholder communication, press outreach, social media strategy, event promotion, and audience engagement. Particular focus was placed on ensuring that the exhibition’s artistic and social dimensions were communicated cohesively and accessibly across both traditional and digital platforms. The exhibition, held in aid of the Ta’ Saura National Empowerment Hub, connected contemporary abstract painting with wider conversations surrounding inclusion, empowerment, accessibility, and social participation. Liaison with The Malta Trust Foundation and supporting partners formed an important part of the project, helping strengthen connections between the cultural sector, philanthropic initiatives, and community-centred engagement. Through strategic communication, cultural mediation, and collaborative coordination, the project highlighted the role of artistic practice not only as exhibition-making, but also as a platform for dialogue, visibility, and collective social impact.</image:caption>

The presentation explored the relationship between culture, wellbeing, participation, and community engagement through collaborative artistic practice within care home environments. The session highlighted the project’s methodology, stakeholder collaboration, participant engagement, and the broader importance of culture and health initiatives within contemporary cultural policy and socially engaged practice. Through this presentation, I shared insights into project coordination, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the role of participatory cultural programmes in fostering inclusion, creativity, and wellbeing across diverse community settings.</image:caption>

The project brought together local and international artists, researchers, curators, and cultural practitioners to explore fiction, memory, and speculative approaches to archival practice through artistic research and interdisciplinary exchange. Working closely with artists and organisers throughout the residency period, Marcon assisted with artist liaison, local coordination, logistical support, and public-facing activities connected to the symposium and exhibition programme hosted at the Malta Society of Arts. Responsibilities included facilitating communication between local stakeholders and international participants, supporting symposium operations, coordinating aspects of the exhibition setup and visitor experience, and helping ensure the smooth delivery of talks, performances, screenings, workshops, and collaborative activities. The symposium Fiction(s) in Archives brought together artists, archivists, researchers, and cultural institutions to examine archives as spaces of fiction, memory, reinterpretation, and collective meaning-making. Through collaborative coordination and artist support, the project contributed to strengthening international cultural exchange and interdisciplinary dialogue within Malta’s contemporary cultural landscape</image:caption>

<image:caption>COASTAL COMMONS - June 2025 was a socially engaged, site-specific residency and public intervention exploring the relationship between coastal public space, environmental sustainability, and collective participation in Birżebbuġa, Malta. Developed as part of the wider European project OTRart, the initiative brought together local and international artists, environmental organisations, residents, and cultural practitioners through a process of artistic research, community dialogue, workshops, and ecological action. As Project Manager, Marcon Borg Caruana coordinated the residency’s operational, community, and collaborative dimensions, supporting artists, partners, local stakeholders, and public engagement activities throughout the project. The residency involved close collaboration with local residents, the Żibel environmental NGO, and the Birżebbuġa Local Council to facilitate workshops, site-based research, clean-up actions, and collective conversations around shared space, memory, and environmental responsibility. The project culminated in a co-created public intervention constructed from reclaimed marine waste materials, encouraging the public to interact with the space through play, gathering, rest, and collective use. Through artistic collaboration, cultural mediation, and community outreach, Coastal Commons explored how creative practice can foster new relationships between people, place, ecology, and the commons.</image:caption>

<image:caption>OPUS THEY - December 2025 The artistic research project ‘Opus they’ brings together visual artist Raphael Vella, sound designer Michael Quinton, architect Chris Briffa and project manager Marcon Borg Caruana to explore ways of collectively challenging anthropocentric perspectives through creative and critical thinking. This project studies how artists, architects, designers and others can contribute to an integrative approach to addressing global crises, through processes that promote cooperation and ethical action while critiquing dualistic distinctions between subjects (human beings) and objects (the external world, knowledge, matter, etc.). The team’s goal is to research innovative and transdisciplinary entanglements of different entities (plants, animals, non-living things, people) by engaging other artists and stakeholders based in different disciplines and creatively reconfiguring traditional understandings of agency. The presentation explored the evolving concept of cultural spaces in Malta through the lenses of accessibility, affordability, digital innovation, commoning practices, and community participation, examining how technology and collaborative cultural models can strengthen cultural engagement across diverse audiences. Drawing from my research in Arts and Cultural Management at Leuphana University, the presentation examined themes such as phygital cultural experiences, digital storytelling, virtual access, shared cultural infrastructure, and sustainable cultural development within the Maltese context. Case studies discussed included the Valletta Design Cluster, Magna Żmien, the Virtual Underwater Museum, and community-based cultural initiatives connected to Valletta 2018. The session also offered practical recommendations for cultural practitioners and policymakers on integrating digital tools, fostering collaboration, and rethinking cultural spaces as shared and evolving environments shaped by participation, empathy, and collective engagement.</image:caption>

<image:caption>REGION CALENDAR 2024 – As Cultural Manager during its designation as Region of Culture 2024, I conceptualized and led the development of a curated annual calendar that celebrates the region’s rich cultural fabric. This project spotlighted twelve local artists and artisans—each representing one of the region’s 12 localities—through professional photography and storytelling. The result was a visually striking and culturally significant calendar that served as a year-long artistic showcase. My role encompassed the overall creative direction, artist selection, coordination of photography and content, and managing the production and regional distribution of the calendar across all local councils. Each month was dedicated to a different artisan or tradesperson: a baker, ceramicist, sculptor, religious statue maker, carpenter, ganutell artisan, festive pavilion designer, fireworks specialist, fisherman, filigree maker, stained glass artist, and ceramic figurine craftsman. These trades, many of which are at risk of fading, form an essential part of Malta’s cultural heritage. Beyond visual presentation, the calendar included a programming element, with events such as artist talks, demonstrations, and community workshops aligned to the featured craft each month. This initiative not only celebrated artistic excellence but also fostered intergenerational appreciation and inspired youth to engage with traditional practices. The project underscores my commitment to preserving and revitalizing artisanal knowledge, ensuring that these invaluable skills continue to thrive in contemporary society.</image:caption>

I worked closely with the Mellieħa Local Council and the Imperial Band Club to integrate the event into the community's cultural fabric. The Mellieħa Local Council provided essential support in organizing the event at Misraħ iż-Żjara tal-Papa Ġwanni Pawlu II, while the Imperial Band Club contributed by sharing their rich musical heritage and archival materials, enhancing the project's depth and authenticity. A significant aspect of the project involved collecting and digitizing personal and communal memories. The Imperial Band Club's archives, including photographs and recordings, were invaluable in this endeavor. Their contributions not only preserved Mellieħa's musical legacy but also enriched the Magna Żmien archive, making these memories accessible to a broader audience. The event featured a time-machine performance by 'Armchair Voyager Wistin and the Banda ta’ Memorji Meraviljużi', a live sound and video installation by Timothy Garrett and Tiny Island Studio, and a short film programme curated by Solar Cinema. These performances, rooted in the collected memories, resonated deeply with attendees, fostering a sense of nostalgia and community pride. The collaboration between Magna Żmien, the Mellieħa Local Council, and the Imperial Band Club exemplified the power of community partnerships in cultural preservation. The event not only celebrated Mellieħa's rich heritage but also ensured that these memories would be preserved for future generations. It held special meaning for me personally, as my own grandfather had once played with the band, making the moment not just a cultural milestone, but a deeply emotional one. <image:caption>ALTOFEST - April 2018 I was entrusted with the unique and deeply human task of bridging artists with citizens—matching international performers with local residents willing to transform their homes into intimate performance venues. My role involved extensive community outreach to identify individuals who would embrace the ethos of the festival: experimental sociality through contemporary live art. I then worked closely with the producers to curate meaningful matches between hosts and artists, ensuring each home was not only a physical space but also a site of dialogue, transformation, and shared experience. The response from the community was extraordinary. What began as a call for a handful of participants quickly grew into one of the largest Altofest editions on the island, resulting in a weekend-long programme of performances across Rabat and Majjistral, and a powerful cultural moment for the North of Malta. Citizens became cultural heroes—a term central to Altofest’s philosophy—as they opened their homes and lives to the unknown, co-creating space for new rituals, encounters, and a legacy of trust between community and contemporary art.</image:caption>

<image:caption>SUBJECTIVE MAPS - March 2018 As the regional coordinator and cultural manager for the Subjective Maps project in St Paul’s Bay, I played a central role in building meaningful connections between the project team and the town’s richly diverse communities. Collaborating closely with the Qawra LEAP Centre, we engaged local residents—many of whom are long-time contributors to social initiatives—in the storytelling workshops, ensuring that underrepresented voices were heard and valued. I also coordinated with the youths of Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, whose creative energy brought the project to life through a vibrant mural that visually interpreted the stories and landmarks mapped during the sessions. This mural became both a celebration of local identity and a testament to the power of youth-driven expression. Through these collaborations, we produced a map that reflects not only the physical geography of St Paul’s Bay but also its emotional landscapes—marked by memory, migration, and community resilience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>ORFEO & MAJNUN - 2018 I coordinated workshops and public programming for Orfeo & Majnun, a large-scale interdisciplinary and participatory music-theatre project developed as part of the Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture programme. The project connected the Greek myth of Orfeo and Eurydice with the Middle Eastern story of Layla and Majnun through music, theatre, storytelling, shadow puppetry, dance, and community participation. Developed in collaboration with international cultural partners across Europe, the initiative brought together artists, schools, musicians, local communities, and participants from diverse backgrounds through a process of co-creation and intercultural dialogue. My role focused on coordinating workshops, participant engagement, logistical planning, and supporting the delivery of the grand public performances and parade in Valletta. I worked closely with local and international artists, community groups such as scouts, schools, and cultural stakeholders to facilitate participation and ensure the smooth implementation of activities leading up to the large-scale final events. The project offered valuable experience in coordinating complex participatory cultural programming involving hundreds of participants, while exploring themes of identity, migration, belonging, love, and collective storytelling through contemporary artistic practice</image:caption>

<image:caption>SENTIERI #5 - April 2018 As regional coordinator for the site-specific performance “Geography: A Track Around Disorientation”, part of Altofest Malta during Valletta 2018, I played a vital role in bridging the artistic vision with the realities of the site and local context. The project took place in a protected natural area, requiring in-depth research into the site’s ecological significance and coordination with park rangers to ensure the landscape was respected and carefully preserved throughout the process. My responsibilities included not only logistical and environmental coordination but also supporting the directors, Serena and Raffaele, by facilitating local connections, sourcing specific materials required for the performance, and helping to adapt their conceptual framework to the physical and cultural environment of the site. I connected the artistic team with key local stakeholders, including environmental authorities, material suppliers, and community contacts, enabling the smooth development of this immersive and reflective work. The performance invited audiences to rediscover the land through movement and presence, while my role ensured that both artistic integrity and environmental consciousness guided every step of the journey.</image:caption>

Recognising the project's potential to combine sustainable technology with accessible cultural programming, I advocated for Solar Cinema to become a key protagonist in the North’s cultural calendar. Through my coordination, screenings were successfully hosted in Majjistral Nature and History Park, Selmun, Mdina and other remote open-air settings, each chosen to maximise public engagement while respecting the natural environment. I liaised with local councils, NGOs, and community stakeholders to secure locations, organise logistics, and promote the events. These efforts resulted in large audience turnouts and highly positive public reception, with many attendees experiencing environmentally sustainable film screenings for the first time. The project not only delivered high-quality international cinema but also demonstrated how culture can thrive in harmony with nature, setting a precedent for future green cultural initiatives in Malta.</image:caption>

My role involved stakeholder coordination, community engagement, logistical support, and assisting with the organisation of activities connected to the historical re-enactments and public programme. I worked closely with local organisations and participants to facilitate collaboration, strengthen community involvement, and contribute to the overall visitor experience. Through the collective efforts of the project team and local stakeholders, the historic war shelter within the former British Naval Hospital was opened to the public for the first time, offering visitors a rare opportunity to engage directly with an important site of military heritage. The project explored themes such as migration, social Europe, security, identity, and alternative futures through community gatherings, workshops, speculative storytelling, and experiential futures methodologies. Working alongside international futurists, artists, researchers, and local communities, the initiative encouraged participants to imagine and prototype preferred futures for Europe from a distinctly Maltese perspective. My contribution focused on project coordination, stakeholder engagement, community outreach, and supporting the delivery of workshops, events, and public programming. I assisted in facilitating communication between partners, participants, and local communities while contributing to the organisational and logistical aspects of the project. The programme combined conferences, exhibitions, meetings, gala dinners, video conferencing, and networking events, with attendance growing from a small delegation to approximately 500 international participants arriving from various regions over the duration of the event. My role involved coordinating complex audiovisual production requirements across multiple locations while managing logistics, scheduling, interpretation services, technical suppliers, large-scale printing coordination, video recording, and live conferencing solutions. A significant aspect of the project included overseeing 16 simultaneous interpretation booths across multiple languages, representing the largest interpretation setup recorded in Malta at the time.
